March Student of the Month

Hi All
We have new student of the month,Scott Billak. Scott started here at mybo doing privates and when his confidence boosted he joined in the group classes,(mind you it didn’t take long he’s a natural). Any how here are some things Scott was willing to share with us.. Now if only I could of snagged a pic…

My 9 – 5 is actually more like a 730am to 500pm and that does not count the getting up at 500am every morning, or at least most of them to start, my day.
I have grown up in Washington DC (was born in Morgantown, WV), and I am a morning person, which helps with the commute from the Oakton VA area to Crystal City every day.
My hobbies include attempting to play golf, when I have some free time, which is not too often these days, and tending to my yard at home (being outside, if that is considered a hobby!!)

It is important to me that I try to be thankful everyday that I wake up (and not take it for granted!!), and how am I going to do something good this day? I wish I could say that every day is this way, but it is not… But it is a goal, I want to start every day this way and I’ll keep working at it until I’m successful, every day.

I started practicing yoga at MYBO in December 2016, so it has not been very long. I had been curious for a while about yoga, its physical and spiritual aspects and it took some prodding from a friend to finally decide to give it a try.

For me, carving out time to have regular exercise is a challenge, too many competing demands for time. After the initial shock of how physically demanding yoga can be, the hour or so of taking a class became much easier, and fun, to make the time to attend on a regular basis. Besides the weight loss and general toning that has come from attending classes on a regular basis, the mental benefits seem to be that I am calmer and more relaxed.

The thing I love most about MYBO is the staff and the instructors. Everyone is passionate about the sharing, teaching and answering any question having to do with enhancing someone’s knowledge and understanding of the benefits, both physical and spiritual, of practicing yoga on a regular basis.

I’m honored to have been considered for something like this, it just makes it that much easier to continue my yoga practice….

March Teacher of the Month

Zoha is our teacher of the month. Don’t let her size fool you she is POWERFUL… We love her spirit and teachings she brings to MYBO. I only wish we could have more classes with her,but she is as all teachers are no mads when it comes to studio placement.

I grew up in Northern Virginia and have a gymnastics and dance background. I have a BA in Communications from George Mason.I love yoga!! I do it in my spare time for funzoha5 and it’s my job so it’s definitely what some would consider yoga overload. I can’t get enough yoga! I also like to paint, and love cooking! My favorite foods are noodles, soup and salad in no particular order.
How many years have you been teaching yoga? 3 years
What is your favorite style to teach? I love them all. No favorite as they each have their own style. I do like teaching a variety of types of classes, it keeps it interesting.
What made you want to become a yoga teacher? My sister bought a yoga studio and I was managing it. Becoming a yoga teacher made sense and I was already in love with yoga. I am so grateful for that semi reluctant choice that turned my life into a whole new direction!
What is your advice to someone considering becoming a yoga teacher? To look at your reasons for becoming a teacher. It’s gotta be somewhere from the heart. The passion is what keeps you going and not let you get burned out. If you’re doing it to stroke your ego don’t even bother.
What is your favorite part of teaching at MYBO? I love the ambiance. It’s welcoming and has a focus on details that enhances the yoga experience. Little luxuries. I also like the way it’s run. The dealings with people; management, other teachers and students have been easy, and no drama. Just love all around.

Last month, I marched in Austin with thousands.  In the sea of humanity that poured into the streets of our state’s capital was such a diversity of people.  Alive with cheers, the power of presence, and an incredible display of freedom of speech, it was the best of democracy.  These moments of history can instill and cement lessons sometimes overlooked.  Just outside the door Mother Nature parallels that march in Austin.  The lesson she teaches us is, only diverse environments are sustainable.  I would offer that lesson holds true for our democracy, too.

 

This blog explains how nature sustains itself through biodiversity in direct contrast with the unsustainable western mechanized agricultural practices.  Maybe we can garner some wisdom for our nation in this practice.  Before we review standard farming practices it is important to understand that technological advancements, reliable seed quality, specialize chemicals, synthetic fertilizers and massive machines enables a single farmer today to feed 155 people versus 26 some short 40 years ago.  In addition, our infrastructure (FM-farm to market roads), storage capacity, transportation, and distribution systems give us incredible access to food.  To say food production is a global business is an understatement, but at what cost?

 

Now for a brief and very simplistic explanation of farming.  To achieve high production rates of crops (mostly corn and soy), the land is sterilized by herbicide, planted with GMO seeds, fertilized in ever increasing amounts for rapid plant growth, and because this is a mono-crop production, insecticides must be used for bugs as well as fungicide for fungus prevention.  The crop and the soil rely completely upon the inputs of the farmer.  If the farmer neglects this process, the harvest may suffer.  The point is, when trying to grow only one type of crop, little else flourishes on its own accord, but nature will always adapt and attempt to introduce diversity.  That is why chemicals must change as bugs mutate, weeds adapt, and crops become vulnerable.  The conclusion of this short lesson on farming is, in order to maintain no diversity in the field, farmers must sterilize, poison and burn.  Only then, can the harvest of a single crop be achieved.  Enlightening huh?

 

Now check out a prairie, forest, meadow, desert, or reef (yes, plants grow underwater) untouched by human inputs.  These bio diverse environments have sustained themselves for thousands of years and adapted to both gentle and radical changes of the earth.  Radical changes come in the forms of floods, infestations, and fires.  Gentle changes come from weather, land movement, and migration.  Either way, nature is in it for the long haul.

 

Is there a way to integrate nature’s sustainable methods?   Sure there is, or I would not be writing this blog.  Permaculture, as in permanent agriculture, is a farming methodology of setting up a bio diverse system within an agricultural field.  This is the technique at our ranch.  In our bio diverse orchard, we have 30 different fruit trees; they include peaches, pears, plums, nectarines, Jujube, and apricots.  Read my earlier blog on that planting adventure.  Instead of a sterile orchard floor, we put gardens in between these young trees and wild flowers and cover crops in the lanes beside the trees.  We are trying to mirror a forest that can be harvested.  Check out a forest the next time you are in one and you will discover an interesting pattern.  Look up and you will see the forest for the trees (bad joke).  It is actually the forest floor where biodiversity reins.  Small bushes protect the trunks of trees, mushrooms feast on decaying leaves, vines wrap themselves around the bark, root plants bring nutrients to the root zone, flowers attract pollinators and herbs protect the forest from insects and disease.

 

Our orchard trees have herbs growing next to them as insect repellant, birds feed on pests, and cool and warm weather crops rotate with the season bringing bio diverse organic matter.  As the trees grow, the gardens get smaller.  Similar to a meadow, the wild flowers that start in March and end in November attract the pollinators we need for fruit production.  Native grasses provide habitat for small animals which are hunted by hawks that keep the crows (who damage fruit) in check.  Once this bio diverse system begins, it adjusts and corrects itself with occasional inputs from humans.  We let the biodiversity of nature help us farm instead of battling it.  Although we can’t feed 155 people, we can create a sustainable food system that will feed people for a lot longer.

 

So, what of human diversity?  It is this grower’s opinion societies are better when we have diversity.  Is it challenging to be diverse, yes, but just like Mother Nature’s ability to sustain itself through the changes, so too can our own democracy.  And in the end it’s all that really matters.

December Teacher of the Month!!

MYBO is very excited to announce Vicky as our teacher of the month. Vicky is a very busy mom with many accomplishments in NASM CPT, FNS MELT, Nutrition and Wellness Specialist. Come see Vicky at 9 am for her Yogalates Class on Saturdays here at MYBO!!!

 

Tell us a little about yourself! Where are you from? What are your hobbies?

I was born in Manhattan but grew up in Kingman, AZ. I spent a lot of time camping, hiking, swimminvicky-g-picg, and hunting rattlesnakes. It was quite the childhood. 😉. My hobbies are studying (nutrition and psychology), swimming, hiking, reading, and writing.
How many years have you been teaching yoga?

I have been teaching yoga about 7 years and Pilates about 5 years now.
What is your favorite style to teach?

I was introduced to yoga and Pilates as part of my swimming training, so I naturally gravitated toward power yoga. However, now that I am a recovering athlete with a multitude of injuries (read: a hot mess), I appreciate a vinyasa flow that combines strength with flexibility and teaches my body to work in synchronicity.
What made you want to become a yoga teacher?vicky-pic

I have always been that person who likes to tell others what to do, not in a bossy way, but because I enjoy helping and teaching. Yoga and Pilates are very helpful for my physical, mental, and spiritual health, so becoming a teacher was a logical next step.
What is your advice to someone considering becoming a yoga teacher?

Do it because you love it and not because you need/want a job. The best instructors are the ones who truly love what they do.

What is your favorite part of teaching at MYBO?

The community spirit. Everyone is a part of the family, which is an element that is missing at some other places I have been.

noticed from doing yoga?
I’m stronger and have gain some of my flexibility back.
What do you love most about MYBO?
I think they have great instructors. Before taking Moriah class, I thought I would never be able to accomplish a headstand or backbend. However after taking her classes I can do both at the age of 50.

November Teacher of the Month

I’m so excited to announce our November teacher of the month. She was a MYBO student first then finished MYBO’s Teacher Training… Joanna

Tell us a little about yourself! Where are you from? What are your hobbies?

Hi! I was born and raised in New York City. Staten Island to be exact. I work for the Department of Justice and bartend at night plus lots of yoga!
My hobbies include yoga, cooking (I come from an Italian American family so I’ve been cooking ever since I can remember), traveling (I’m always up for an adventure and love exploring new places), coaching cheerleading (I was a competitive cheerleader for about 10 years), crafting (I’m currently planning a wedding so yoga is a great way to de-stress), touring wineries (I’ve been to over 50 local vineyards), taking my Shih Tzu Charlie to social events around the city (he’s quite popular and loves to make friends wherever he goes), and spending time with my family and friends.

How many years have you been teaching yoga?

I’m actually a product of Mind Your Body Oasis’ Yoga teacher training and became certified to teach yoga in April 2015.

What is your favorite style to teach?

I’m certified to teach Vinyasa, Restorative, and FloYo (yoga on a stand up paddle board). My favorite style of yoga to teach is Vinyasajoanna-blog-3 because it allows me to be creative in sequencing and focus on the beauty and grace of breath with movement. In my classes, I try and emphasize the importance of body alignment and breath, explain the benefits from certain poses, all while having fun. I truly believe how you are on your mat is how you are in your life. Time on your mat is special “me” time and a safe place where you can find sweetness when the going gets tough, humility as the yoga journey is never ending, and learning to give yourself some credit, self-love and compassion, and not take yourself so seriously. It’s called yoga practice, not yoga perfect; so smile and have fun!

What made you want to become a yoga teacher?

In spring of 2014, I fell in love with yoga and got into practicing at MYBO regularly. When MYBO debuted their teacher program in Fall 2014, Soozie Kinstler (my yoga guru) urged me to participate but I thought I wasn’t experienced enough as everyone else or I would be too busy with work and instantly regretted that decision so I immediately jumped on the next teacher training opportunity and made it happen. Initially I wanted to strengthen my own practice and learn more about yoga (asana, breathing techniques, history, philosophy, meditation, anatomy, ayurveda, etc.) but along the way, I felt the gifts of yoga were too great not to share with everyone around me and decided I wanted to teach. When I decided to look into yoga teaching programs, I found MYBO Yoga Teacher Training to be a versatile and well-rounded program- one that thoroughly prepared it’s students to teach all levels. I am forever grateful I had the opportunity to train under so many great teachers (Amanda Shipe, Soozie Kinstler, Dr. Hawa to name a few) and I am proud to be a #MYBObaby!

What is your advice to someone considering becoming a yoga teacher?
If not now, when? If you are considering yoga teacher training, even just the slightest, do it! DO IT FOR YOU! Even if you aren’t sure you want to teach, teacher training will help you live a healthier and more conscientious life. Not only will you learn so much about yoga but the immersion will help you evolve as a person. I guarantee you will have a well-trained, qualified, and supportive group to guide you on your journey. Don’t let fear or made up excuses keep you from your potential.

My favorite part of teaching at MYBO is the tight knit community of like-minded individuals who value health, well-being, and lifting each other up. November Student of the Month

I am so happy to announce our student of the month. Samantha Baker has been practicing with MYBO for a year & four months, with her practice growing stronger with every visit. Samantha isn’t one to just do Yoga she jumps around to many of the different classes MYBO offers. Thank you Samantha keep growing strong with MYBO!

I am a finance manager for the physician residency program at a DC hospital. It doesn’t sound exciting but it’s actually quite an intense job. With finance, everything has to add up perfectly and when it doesn’t, things become stressful very fast!
I’m from Sunrise, FL. It’s a suburb outside of Ft. Lauderdale. I grew up there but have moved around a lot since. I moved to Arlington from Pittsburgh, PA.
I am a voracious reader. I will read anything. Sometimes I’ll start to wonder about how something works or the details of a historical event and then find myself going down a wiki hsamantha-pic-2ole. I hate to admit this but I also watch a lot of television. Right now I’m obsessed with HGTV. I love watching Tiny House Hunters and Fixer Upper.
As I’ve gotten older, I’ve become concerned about my health and the way I treat my body. I always tell myself – I may not want to eat this salad right now but my future self will thank me for it! I also direct most of my focus towards my relationships. I used to be so focused on work and proving myself there but now I see that other things are more important. My relationships with my partner, my family and myself are more important than anything else.
I know this will sound surprising but I’ve been practicing yoga on and off for 7 years. I had an injury a couple years ago and stopped practicing out of fear for a long time. But this year my stress was off the charts and I felt that yoga would add balance to my life. I had originally started practicing yoga purely for exercise and did it because of that for several years. However, now I find that it really impacts my mood and spirit when I do not practice – so for everyone’s benefit, I try to come everyday! I alternate between yoga and pilates. I like to mix it up even though pilates doesn’t provide as much of a spiritual experience, it is still a great workout.
MYBO’s community atmosphere is really great. It is hard to meet new people when you’re in a new place. My coworkers are all older than me and living in a high rise apartment can be very impersonal. At MYBO, I’ve become friends with those in my classes and the staff. (It also provides great accountability when you are thinking about skipping!)

October Student of the Month

Meet Jie MYBO’s October student of the month. Jie has been practicing with MYBO for a few months sometimes twice a day!! Her practice is getting STRONGER by the minute! congrats Jie!!

I am Jie (Eva) Yu from China. I just graduated from Johns Hopkins University and now  I am working in DC area. If you find someone in Johns Hopkins hoodie in the studio, it may be me.

I spend most of my time in office, in front of the computer. To be honest, I do not like it. I like out door activities like hiking, climbing and even working and jogging.  After graduation, I still spend a lot of time in studying new things. for example, dancing, drawing and reading some professional or unprofessional books. Of course, yoga is the one I am now passionate about.

I started practicing yoga two months ago. Initially, I want to lose weight without hurting myself. Yes! After 2 months, i really lost more than 10 lbs. However, after practicing, i found the more important thing is not losing weight anymore. Yoga also gives me peaceful mind. Every time after practicing yoga, I feel satisfied, peaceful and relaxed. No matter what I have met during the day, nothing left after yoga. And this is my great motivation to practice yoga regularly and even every day. I enjoy it because it gives me time to stay with my soul, to rethink about myself, and to find myself. It makes me stronger not only physical but also mental. jie-pic

I like instructors in MYBO best. They are kind and I feel they really understand the spirit of yoga and try to tell us students. The are not only teaching yoga posture but also teaching the spirit of life.
