Congratulations to August Student of the Month Margo C!

Meet Margo, August’s Student of the Month: Margo is an Attorney for a federal law enforcement agency. Born and raised in Colorado, she moved to this area after law school.

“I met my amazing husband in DC and we live in the Capitol Hill neighborhood. I love to laugh, cook, scrapbook, play chess, travel, go to sporting events, read, brunch, spend time with my family, and of course practice yoga! I am very passionate about my family. I have a large immediate family that is continuously growing! My parents are my heroes and family is everything to me.”

What might you not know about Margo: Each of my three siblings was born in a different country!
Margo is motivated to practice yoga because: I took my first yoga class over 7 years ago and practiced off and on until I found MYBO. This studio has been very welcoming and I am fortunate and grateful to practice at MYBO as much as I do. I have received so much support and guidance from all of the teachers (particularly my Guru, Soozie!) and I am continuously inspired by the many friends I have made. Yoga truly connects and bonds people and MYBO brings so much light to my daily life.

“Yoga is incredibly pure to me and I am dedicated to a consistent practice because it gives me such a positive outlook. When I leave yoga class my mind always feels clearer, lighter, and happier.”

The biggest physical/mental health benefit Margo has noticed: Yoga (particularly hot yoga!) has humbled me and given me strength and confidence that I didn’t know existed. There is so much power and positivity in the practice and it reminds me that when my mind is in a positive place, my body, energy, and attitude will naturally follow. Yoga is physically challenging but it is also playful and it keeps me grounded and open minded. Through yoga, I am constantly learning new things about myself and my surroundings. It has been a truly transformative process (both mentally and physically)!

For those of you considering trying out our studio: Why not give it a try?!? Whether it is to relieve stress, detox, relax, increase strength, flexibility, or mobility; yoga will change your life. There is so much to gain. The benefits are endless!

To stay centered and calm in our hectic world, Margo recommends: Practicing mindfulness and focusing on my breath helps me put things in perspective and stay focused on what is really important. Taking a few deep breaths helps me let go of things and yoga reminds me that there is beauty to be found in everything.

Teacher Tips to Take your Practice to the Next Level

Here are the steps to get into standing forehead to knee. Each step should be mastered with a standing straight leg (e.g. muscles activated above and behind the knee to prevent hyperextension) before moving on to the next.

This pose builds mental strength; improves concentration; unifies the mind and body; tightens the abdominal and thigh muscles. It is also good for diabetes. As you breathe into the pose, feel how it squeezes and flushes out the internal abdominal organs, such as the gall bladder, pancreas and spleen, as well as the uterus and ovaries and increases flexibility of the sciatic nerves. An active pose, it strengthens the tendons, biceps of the thigh muscles, and hamstrings in the legs while developing the deltoids, trapezius, latissimus dorsi, scapula, biceps and triceps all while working on the muscles of the back.

So how do you make it happen?

  1. Distribute weight equally over the four points of the foot
  2. Activate all the muscles of the knee of the standing leg including the quadriceps and muscles behind the knee.
  3. Keep a tight, webbing to webbing grip with all ten fingers
  4. Leg is parallel to the floor with heel in line with hip.
  5. Suck your stomach in and contract your abdominal muscles
  6. Flex the whole foot back toward your face beyond perpendicular while kicking forward from the hip through the heel.
  7. Elbows reach towards the calf muscle and attempt to go below.
  8. Tuck chin to chest, round the spine, touch forehead to knee for the final expression.

Share your progress on this pose with us on Facebook or Instagram!

LayerOne Wellness Products Now Available!

We’re excited to announce we’re now partnering with LayerOne Wellness, featuring their products in the studio. From the owner, Blair, a former teacher at MYBO:

“LayerOne began as a labor of love; a small set of handmade food-grade lotion that I shared with my family on my wedding day. It has since grown, for me, into something much bigger. It became a path to helping others by learning and sharing products made with integrity, and building skills around healthy lifestyle and love. I hope to share this with you to create a better, more natural world. From my first layer, LayerOne.”

We have a variety of LayerOne products at Mind Your Body Oasis, including Kinstler yoga massage oil!

Named for Master Yogini, Soozie Kinstler, the relaxation oil is designed for everyday personal face massage and yoga adjustments. The premier blend of organic oils were selected for anti-bacterial properties and low-comedogenic factor (acne clearing and avoiding). High in carrier oils, Kinstler absorbs quickly and does not leave greasy residue.

  • Rosehip Seed Oil high in essential fatty acids calms and nourishes
  • Vitamin A hydrates and absorbs quickly
  • Hemp oil protects the skin from free radicals while olive oil builds the protective barrier
  • Castor oil cleanses and rejuvenates
The gift of massage in practice and in everyday is a form of communication we don’t often find. We designed Kinstler to facilitate our connection to each other and find a new, deeper layer.

Practice health care and wellness from a “whole body” perspective

Our Nutrition and Health Coaches are knowledgeable advisors who provide ongoing support and guidance as you set goals and make sustainable changes that improve your health and happiness. We will listen carefully and help you to navigate the world of contradictory nutrition advice to determine what changes are necessary for you.

Our July special let’s you take advantage of just that! – Get a 90-minute coaching session plus $100 towards supplements and five sauna sessions. A $400 value, this month just $199.

Our goal is to practice health care and wellness from a “whole body” perspective. We take a holistic approach to health and wellness, which means that we look at how all areas of your life are connected. Does stress at your job or in your relationship cause you to overeat? Does lack of sleep or low energy prevent you from exercising? As we work together, we will look at how all parts of your life affect your health as a whole.

Every person has unique food and lifestyle needs. One person’s food is another person’s poison, and that’s why fad diets tend to fail in the long run. Working on the principle of bio-individuality, we will support you to make positive changes that are based on your unique needs, preferences, and ancestral background. We use a personalized, holistic approach to ensure that you will have great success!

Together, we’ll work to reach your health goals in areas such as:

  • achieving optimal weight
  • reducing food cravings
  • increasing sleep
  • maximizing energy and focus
  • optimizing athletic performance
  • balancing life’s issues
  • a personalized supplementation program
  • an individualized fitness plan
  • food preparation, from everyday meals to specialty diets (i.e., paleo, raw foods, vegetarian/vegan, low carb, macrobiotic and more)
  • guided grocery store tours and kitchen consultations

Learn to care for your body inside and out!

July’s theme of the Month: Atman, the authentic True Self and the Koshas

Each month Mind Your Body Oasis teachers encourage students to focus on a particular aspect. This may be in how we practice yoga, our daily lives, how we interact with our world or how we understand ourselves. July’s theme asks us to explore our true selves through a series of layers, like a onion, and how these layers interact with each other and the external world.

The yogic perspective is to embrace the totality of one’s being. In order to understand yourself fully, you have to dissect the layers of your being in order to see how they are all related and effect one another.

These layers of an individual are called the koshas, the five layers of physical and mental being composing the personal self. They are the covering, or the “lampshade”, over the light of of your being, that light is called Atman, your soul, which is the spiritual life principle of the universe. The lack of ability to distinguish between self and non-self is termed “avidya” (ignorance) which is the main cause of human suffering (“klesha”) (Patanjali yoga sutras 2.3 thru 2.9)
It is our identification with the ‘mind-body complex’ that prevents us from realizing our true nature (the self) which is represented by our soul (Atma). Once we develop an understanding of the five koshas, it helps us slowly peel off these layers and bring us closer to our true identity. According to Vedanta the wise person, being aware of the subtle influences of the five elements within each kosha, ever discerns the Self amidst appearances.

With the privilege of being humans interacting with life itself, through the five elements: (earth, water, fire, air and space), the constant practice is to see the light of Atman illuminating the rest of the layers of one’s individual existence. The practice is to understand the rest of the layers, how they work individually and collectively but to know that these layers are a pathway of discovery, not the gold at the end of the rainbow.

The five sheaths (pancha-kosas) are described in the Taittiriya Upanishad.  From gross to fine they are:

  • Annamaya kosha, “foodstuff” sheath (Anna)
  • Pranamaya kosha, “energy” sheath (Prana/apana)
  • Manomaya kosha, “mind-stuff” sheath (Manas)
  • Vijnanamaya kosha, “wisdom” sheath (Vijnana)
  • Anandamaya kosha, “bliss” sheath (Ananda)

We’ll be exploring each of these layers throughout the month so be sure to check back for more information or ask us at the studio!
