Meet Lisa, MYBO’s April teacher of the month. She is a beautiful soul who loves to teach yoga to those willing to learn.
Tell us a little about yourself! Where are you from? What are your hobbies?
I grew up in Pittsburgh, PA with my parents and older brother, David. I moved to Red Bank, NJ in my early twenties and spent the better part of 15 years there, getting married to my husband, Chris, in 2005. We moved to Northern Virginia in 2008 and currently reside in the Del Ray neighborhood in Alexandria. Since I was a child, I’ve always had the artistic bug in me. I have always loved the theater, both improv and scripted performances. I love laughter. Anything creative and/or crafty-clever lights me up. I also consider myself a nurturer, so it’s no surprise that my career has taken me from a group home assistant (adult special needs), to special education teacher(children and teens), and now to massage therapy and yoga.
How many years have you been teaching yoga?
I received my yoga teaching certificate in February 2015.
What is your favorite style to teach?
My favorite style to teach is Vinyasa. All of my classes will feature aspects of this style, and I’ll often include music that is fun and complementary to the poses I use.
What made you want to become a yoga teacher?
I was drawn to the yoga principles that connect me physically and spirituallty. The disciplines I’ve learned have added a balance and sense of calm to my life that I cherish and now that I’m a teacher, want to pass on to others.
What is your advice to someone considering becoming a yoga teacher?
To just embrace everything about it, from the history of the practice to the physical movements to the mental aspects. And remember that it is a never-ending journey. This is why it is a practice..not a perfect. Becoming a teacher is just the beginning, I learn new things every day in my practice!
What is your favorite part of teaching at MYBO?
I felt welcomed and like part of the family immediately. There is a “close-knittedness” between the staff and clients, and it’s all done in a very comfortable, professional, and well-run studio in the heart of Crystal City.
